CHARLOTTE — Carowinds, the amusement park designed to bring the twoCarolinascloser together, is a great day trip for thrill seekers of all ages.
The park opened in 1973 and is only about two hours fromBurlington. Not only does the park have an ample amount of roller coasters for those seeking an adrenaline rush, but it has plenty of activities for kids and those who prefer a more laidback day.
Kids can have a blast at “Planet Snoopy,” where they can enjoy many of the classic carnival rides or a few kiddie coasters. There also is “BoomerangBay,” Carowind’s own water park, that can serve as a relief from the sweltering summer heat.
The park’s newest coaster is bound to make any thrill junkie proud. The “Intimidator,” named in honor of the late NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, is advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest coaster in the Southeast. That is easy to believe when you are 23 stories in the air, going 75 mph for 5,316 feet of track. The first drop at a 74-degree angle for 211 feet is more than enough to satisfy a serious coaster lover.
Carowinds opened a new ride, the “Windseeker,” which lifts riders 30 stories into the air and swings them to give the the sense of flying. The ride gives an amazing view of not just the park, but the bulk of the Queen City.
The park is a great way to have fun this summer, all without having to travel very far from home.
