Alamance Children’s Theatre will be performing Anthony Drewe’s “Honk!” for the next two weekends at the Paramount Theater, 128 E. Front St., Burlington.
“Honk!” is a musical adaptation of the classic story, “The Ugly Duckling,” by Hans Christian Andersen. The musical follows its protagonist Ugly, the son of two ducks, as he is born with obvious differences than his brothers and sisters. It progresses quickly when Ugly is stalked by a hungry Cat, the enemy of most of the barnyard fowl.
Despite being warned by his loving mother Ida, many times, Ugly is enticed by the Cat and ends up becoming separated from his tormenting siblings and peers. Ugly embarks on a journey, not only to find his way back home, but also to discover who he is in the process. Along the way, Ugly encounters many unique characters and finds out that being different is not a bad thing to be.
“My favorite part of the show is when the bullfrog and the froglets cheer Ugly up and let him know that someone is out there who will love him,” said Ryan Mertz who plays the Bullfrog.
“Honk!” is directed by Wayne Leonard, with musical direction by Jennifer Gibbons, assisted by Abby Chester, and choreography by Alicia Curtis.
“The music is so fun, and it’s really cool to see how our characters act together,” said Morgan Smith, who plays Lowbutt.
Madelyn Tubiolo, who plays the mother of Ugly said, “my favorite part of the show is just watching the other actors perform — like the Cat, the Bullfrog, Queenie and Lowbutt, and Greylag and the geese — just everyone really, they’re all so talented.”
The cast and crew have been working hard for the past couple of months in preparation for the upcoming shows.
“My favorite part of ‘Honk!’ has to be the music. The music is catchy and singable, and the lyrics are very witty. Anthony Drewe and George Stiles are British and have a wicked sense of humor that comes across in the music. The music will appeal to everyone, but some of the lyrics have puns and jokes that only the adults will get,” Wayne Leonard said.
