Name: Southern Middle School Concert Band
Director: Derek Breshears
Highlights from last year: Field trip to UNC-Chapel Hill where the band was given VIP treatment by Jeffrey Fuchs and the Marching Tar Heels.
“They also brought our students onto the practice field to march alongside the Tar Heels during a run-through of their pregame show. It was an outstanding experience,” Breshears said.
In the spring, the band put on an event known as The Concert For Life, raising more than $4,000 for the American Cancer Society. The band came in third place out of eight bands in its division at the competition in Carowinds. And in February, numerous Southern students also participated in the All-County Band clinic in February at Williams High School under the guest leadership of Jane Cutchin from Phillips Middle School in Chapel Hill.
From the director: “Last year was an outstanding year for the Southern Middle School Band and this year promises to be even better,” Breshears said.
