Heat, sweat, bicycles and beach — four words usually not associated with each other. Right?
On June 13, 72 bikers started out in Burlington and pedaled 200 miles to New Bern in the annual Double Down to the Beach (DD2B). In 90-degree weather, the bicyclists cycled back roads, semi-busy highways and into farm country just to say they cycled 200 miles in one day.
Unfortunately, the temperature on the day of the event was a scorcher. With the surface temperature of the asphalt being 107 degrees and the outside temperature varying between 97 and 99 degrees, riders had to stay hydrated and cool. One rider had consumed three gallons of water in approximately 160 miles. Some riders dropped out after lunch (some earlier) due to heat, cramps, and plain exhaustion.
I was riding SAG (Support And Gear) with my mom and we helped out at rest stops and picked up riders when they said they were done. Near the last rest stop, a rider experienced a heat stroke. Luckily for him, 911 was called and came within minutes. He recovered but unfortunately couldn’t finish the ride.
The ride overall was an amazing experience. The riders and the support teams were all so nice and I had a fun time driving around watching all the riders. It takes a lot of courage and strength to bicycle 200 miles in one day … could you do it?
Burlington Velo Club (BVC) serves as host for this annual ride to raise money for its scholarship funds, which are awarded to local high school graduates. If you’d like to know more about the DD2B ride or see pictures of this year’s ride, go to the BVC website at www.burling
