What styles of dresses can you expect to see at Homecoming dances as well as fall and winter formals this season?
Three sales associates weighed in on the subject — Aura Martinez from Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh; Larissa Hamilton from Dillard’s in Burlington; and Debra Harrison from JCPenney in Burlington.
Teens & 20s: What types of dresses have you seen sold the most this year? What is the most popular?
Martinez: Short, sparkly and poofy dresses. Not everyone likes tight dresses or feels comfortable wearing one. Belk tries to cater to people’s preferences and have something for everyone.
Hamilton: Tight-fitting blue dresses have been really popular and we have sold a lot of dresses with spaghetti straps. The girls come in looking for a sparkly dress, but a lot of people end up leaving with something more simple.
Harrison: The girls have been buying a lot of two-piece dresses, and the guys are loving the bow ties this year. We have sold a lot of dresses that are loose and simple, with a little flair at the hip. Especially dresses with thin straps, not a lot of sparkle though, this year has been all about the simple dresses.
Teens & 20s: Do you have any advice for someone who is looking to spend less money this semi-formal season?
Martinez: Watch the ads and newspaper for when Belk has sales. Especially this winter, that is when this semi-formal season will be over and the store will mark down a lot of the dresses.
Hamilton: We will probably start to put these dresses on sale within the next couple of weeks as the season is about to end. We have seen a lot of people buying dresses while the prices are lower, and then waiting to wear them to a later dance. This way girls can get a dress they love, but not have to spend a ton of money on it.
Harrison: JCPenney is going paperless soon, so if people get the brand new JCPenney phone app then they will always have access to the latest deals and coupons. These dresses should go on sale before Christmas.
