Ambitious, goal-oriented and determined are all words that can be used to describe Haley Garrison, a seventh-grader at Hawbridge Charter School and November’s Student of the Month.
“The traits that are most striking about Haley are her determination, and the way she has set a path for herself at such a young age,” said Lynn Garrison, Haley’s grandmother, who nominated her for Student of the Month. “She is a thoughtful leader.”
Haley founded the school’s first Home Economic club and thanks to her leadership, the club has grown and has become quite popular among the other students. Another project she has also made successful is called the Community Project or 12 MOD (12 Months of Donations). The project is designed to have donations year-round. Each month has a different theme for items donated. She had started the idea in August. This month, the theme is toys, so Haley retrieved her gently used toys from the attic and will donate them, possibly at Goodwill.
“She was very thoughtful in setting themes for each month according to what upcoming needs may be,” Lynn said.
Haley also is on the Middle School Dance committee and is very active in planning school dances. At the end of this month, she will play with selected Gamelan Orchestra players from Hawbridge in Hill Hall Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“I know I am young and have a lot of time to decide, but it will be in education field,” Haley said.
The inspiration behind an interest in teaching is all because of her now retired elementary school principal Louise Butler and her aunt, Jen Stephenson.
“I like her style of teaching,” Haley describes, referring to Stephenson. She plans to complete numerous college classes while attending high school.
Haley enjoys cooking with her father, attending bluegrass festivals with her grandparents, making videos, camping, creating PowerPoint presentations and collecting various pieces of pottery from strolls in Saxapahaw.
Haley has a lot of wonderful traits in a person so young. This Student of the Month has a lot going for her.
